  • Awards for Animation

Visually captivating animations made by four students in the Film/Animation/Video department will be displayed in an upcoming exhibition at The Museum of American Illustration. The collection features the work of over 200 college-level artists who were recognized for their superb work submitted to the Society of Illustrators’ 2013 Student Scholarship Competition.

Troubleshooting, a black and white animation (a still of the work is pictured above) created by Eric Ko 13 FAV took second place in the competition and earned the senior a $500 scholarship.
Ko’s success lies in simplicity, he says. “I purposely limited myself by stripping the aesthetics down to the bare minimum,” Ko notes. “This allowed me to focus more on animating rather than the technical stuff that happens to come with creating more complicated visuals.”

I Am X, a cheery animation made in Adobe After Effects and Flash by Elise Fachon 12 (still pictured above) took third place. The RISD alum was awarded a $250 scholarship.
“I think this piece is unique in its playfulness,” Fachon explains. “It has been my experience that sometimes art must become dark and heavy to have meaning to it. I wanted to make something that was meaningful but still lighthearted.”

Fool of People by José Rodriguez FAV 12 (still pictured above) and The Placeholder by Robert Farrar 13 FAV were also both given honorable mentions.

The students’ animations will be playing in The Museum of American Illustration during the show which will run from May 15 through June 5.

  • The lovely looks of MEN, hit the StyleWeek Northeast runway Thursday night. But vests and and tailored pants weren’t in the spotlight. The flowy women’s apparel collection produced by RISD alums Masha Davydova 12 AP, Emily Shaw 12 AP, and Natalia Burakowska 12 AP is inspired by the works of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

MEN’s wide-legged trousers, delicate dresses and loose cardigans would all make the perfect outfit for a cruise on the Seine River. “We wanted the clothes to be comfortable but also inspire a sense of romance,” explained Shaw after the show. ”All three of us are interested in art history. Great painters from the 1920s definitely influenced our collection.”

At a ripe age of 23, Shaw already has much design experience under her belt. She designed a “capsule collection” for clothing powerhouse Urban Outfitters before graduating last year.
